Phone vs laptop as the VideoKe host
Either device can host a VideoKe room. The wrong choice is hosting on a phone while trying to approve joiners, drag the queue, and HDMI to a TV with one hand. This is how I split the jobs.
What “host” means here
Host is the account (or guest session) that created the room. That browser tab owns playback timing. If that tab dies, the night gets ugly. Pick the device that will stay on a charger and stay in a lap or on a table, not the device that will be in a back pocket during dancing.
Laptop as host (default recommendation)
Use a laptop when:
- More than three people will add songs.
- You need to see join requests without pinching a tiny panel.
- You will drag to reorder Up next.
- You will HDMI or cast to a TV from that same machine.
Keep the VideoKe tab on the laptop. Output audio to the TV or soundbar from that laptop. Joiners use phones only to add songs and to sing. In the same room, their phones should not also play the track.
Phone as host (when it is fine)
Use a phone when:
- It is two or three friends and the queue will stay short.
- There is no TV; the phone speaker or a Bluetooth speaker paired to that phone is the PA.
- You accept that drag-and-drop and the requests panel are fiddlier.
Do not use a phone as host if you also need that phone for WhatsApp, camera, and rideshare. Notifications will cover the player. Better: laptop hosts, phone stays a phone.
Driving a TV without doubling audio
Cast or HDMI from the host device. One video, one audio path.
Joiners who open the same room on a laptop in front of the TV will play a second copy. Ask them to mute, or to use Hide my video so they follow the queue without a second player. Feature notes: Singing score, hide-my-video, and room chat.
A tablet as a dedicated lyrics screen is fine if it is muted. A tablet as a second host is not a thing — there is only one host.
Switching devices mid-night
You cannot “hand hosting” to another logged-in user. If the laptop overheats, warn the group, leave (this closes the room), start a new room on the new device, send a new code, re-approve people, and rebuild a short queue from Recents or a playlist. That sting is why the host device should be plugged in from the start. After the party explains what survives a close.
Guests should almost never “help” by hosting
Well-meaning friends will offer to start a second room so “everyone can pick.” Two rooms means two queues and a split party. One room, one code, one stage. Guests join; they do not host a parallel night in the group chat.

- Living room + TV: laptop hosts, TV is the display, phones add songs.
- Picnic / no TV: phone hosts into a Bluetooth speaker, keep the group tiny.
