Remote karaoke when friends are in different cities
Friends in different cities can share a VideoKe room. What they cannot share is one set of living-room speakers. Latency, echo, and “whose player is the stage” are the whole problem. This page is the layout that fails least.
One host, many listeners
Someone still creates the room. Their player is the timing source for the session. Everyone else joins with the code and gets approved. There is no “mesh karaoke” where four hosts stay in sync. How to host.
Each city hears their own embed (or the host, if they are in the host’s house). You will not get choir-perfect duets across islands. You will get a shared queue and roughly the same track. If someone needs perfect togetherness, they need the same room physically.
Do not point a phone at a TV into a video call
That path records the karaoke track, the singer, and the room, then plays it late into someone else’s mic, which plays it again. Echo city.
Better:
- Each location plays VideoKe locally, muted mics on the call or
- Call for faces only, karaoke in VideoKe, headphones on the call, or
- No call at all — queue + chat is enough.
If you use VideoKe’s optional in-room calling (when enabled), same rule: headphones on remote mics, do not aim mics at speakers. Score, hide video, chat.
Hide-my-video is for same-room extras, not for remote singers
Remote people need the lyrics. They should not hide the player unless they are watching someone else’s screen in the same apartment. Same-apartment extras: hide video so only one PA runs. Phone vs laptop.
Queue across timezones
Someone will add a song and disappear to cook. That is fine. Do not skip it in 20 seconds because “they’re not ready.” Chat “you’re up” and wait a bit. Guest controls off unless the remote group is tiny and kind. Etiquette.
Blocked embeds hurt more when the only person who knows another upload is in another city. Prep a short tested playlist. Won’t play.
Bandwidth
Ask people to close extra tabs on the host. A dying phone hotspot will look like “VideoKe is slow.” If the host’s player stutters, skip to a less heavy video or have the host plug into stable wifi. Joiners stuttering should refresh themselves, not the host.
Privacy is unchanged
A remote room is still not public. Codes, approval, host-leave-closes. Do not post the code on a public Facebook event. Why rooms stay private.
A setup you can copy
- Host in City A: laptop, headphones or local speaker, room started, two warmup songs queued.
- Paste code in the private group chat.
- Approve names you know.
- Voice call optional; if on, all remote mics on headphones, karaoke volume on VideoKe not on the call speaker.
- End: host announces last song, leaves, sends “same time next week, new code.”
Checklist still applies — charger and tested embeds matter more when you cannot lean over someone’s laptop.
