Office and team karaoke without turning it into a webinar
Work karaoke dies when it feels mandatory, recorded, or like an extra meeting with lyrics. VideoKe can be a short optional social if you host it like a private room — because that is what it is. This is the office version, not a generic “team building games” list.
Optional, time-boxed, no cameras unless people ask
Put it on the calendar as *optional 45 minutes after standup* or *Friday 5:30, leave whenever*. Send the code only in the team channel, not in a public Slack connect channel. Approve people you know. If a vendor appears in pending, deny. Privacy model.
Default cameras off. Lots of people will sing toward a laptop in a bedroom they do not want on video. Audio + queue is enough. If you enable calling, say so in advance so people can decline.
One host, not a rotating webinar host
A manager who “just starts the Zoom” is the wrong instinct. One person opens VideoKe, owns the laptop, keeps guest controls off unless the group is five friends who already karaoke together. Skip wars in front of coworkers are how people never return. Host vs guest.

Repertoire that does not pick on people
No “sing your most embarrassing song.” No forcing the intern. Allow passing. A warmup playlist of well-known group choruses is safer than deep cuts that only one person can sing. Playlists.
Skip anything that would be HR-adjacent. You know your culture. The queue is not anonymous.
Remote teammates
They join the same room. They need a working embed on their side. They should headphone if they are also on a voice call so the karaoke track does not echo into everyone else’s standup leftover. Remote karaoke.
Do not require them to have a TV. A laptop player is the stage for them. Same-office people mute duplicate players.
Ads and professionalism
Browse pages might show ads for trial users. The room will not. Do not spend the social explaining monetization. If someone asks, ads and subscriptions exists. You can host a small room without buying a plan.
Shutdown
Forty-five minutes, last song, host leaves, room gone. Nobody should feel they have to stay until the queue drains. After the party.
